Most of what we see today on Bigfoot TV shows and at Bigfoot conferences is a very flesh and blood or ‘nuts and bolts’ approach to the origin of bigfoot. Basically that in remote (and sometimes not so remote) places on our planet, there are large bipedal hairy organic creatures roaming around, sometimes, but not often, coming in to contact with humans.
But no nuts and bolts theory really takes in all the evidence and reports of bigfoot activity. The difference in physical appearance, including size, shape and color, the occasional urban and surburban sighting, the connection between UFOs and other data are often thrown out in nuts and bolts type theories.
Here are several of the more popular nuts and bolts explanations to bigfoot
The Bigfoot-Giganto Theory
Most popular in this direction is the ‘The Bigfoot-Giganto Theory’, that Bigfoot is a Gigantopithecus, a large ape like creature believed to be last found in Asia some 300,000 years ago. Those creatures crossed the Bering Land Bridge and inhabited North America, evolving into modern day Bigfoot. Little is known about the Gigantopithecus, as only teeth and some jawbones have ever been confirmed to belong to them.
Hybrid Hominin Theory
Hominins are classified as a tribe of primates. Hominins are part of the family of primates, called hominids. Hominids include orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, and human beings.
Paleontologist define hominins as primates that share characteristics such as bipedalism, reduced canine size, and increasing brain size.
Mainstream science believes the only hominins currently on earth are human beings. Extinct hominins include Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus anamensis, Paranthropus aethiopicus, Homo erectus, Homo antecessor, Homo neanderthalensis and Homo sapiens. Fossilized remains of hominin species have been found in parts of Africa, Europe, and Asia, many dating back millions of years. Other hominins have been found to live on earth as recently as 50,000 years ago.
The hybrid hominin theory is that cross breeding of known or unknown hominins have created the creature we today call sasquatch.
Washington State’s Mitchel Townsend has done extensive research of forensic data concerning this theory.
Paranthropus Theory
Similar to ‘The Bigfoot-Giganto Theory’ is the ‘Paranthropus Theory’, that Bigfoot is the descendant of Paranthropus, a genus of bipedal apes that evolved in Africa from the Australopithecines, which is the same ancestors from which humans are thought to have come from. This theory ties human’s past much closer Bigfoot’s, explaining the bipedal nature of Bigfoot and similar feet.
Neanderthal
Could it be possible that Bigfoot is a surviving Neanderthal? Neanderthals are a species of thought to be extinct humans in the genus Homo, possibly a subspecies of Homo sapiens. They are closely related to modern humans, differing in DNA by only a third of a percent. First showing up on earth about 600,000 years ago, recent fossil evidence puts them still around for sure as recent as 30,000 years ago, coexistencing with humans and most likely crossbreeding. While the Hollywood version of Neanderthal is fairly human like, its believed they were quite difference in appearance and closer to many descriptions of modern Bigfoot than modern humans. You could add that Bigfoot is a ‘Neanderthals on human’ love child as a possibility to this theory and that Bigfoot just happened to leaned more towards the Neanderthal side of the family tree.
Weird
Beyond the ‘nuts & bolts’ theories we get into the weird, that Bigfoot is not a flesh and blood creature as we know it, but something much… weirder.
Sometimes Bigfoot is associated with traits which don’t fit so well with traditional science, like teleportation, cloaking and invisibility and even telepathy. People who experience this type of Bigfoot encounter find it hard to identify Bigfoot as a flesh and blood type creature.
Bigfoot is an Alien
The Bigfoot & UFO connection is well documented. There are multiple cases of both being seen short periods of time. Silent Invasion: The Pennsylvania UFO-Bigfoot Casebook Book by Stan Gordon is probably my favorite.
Bigfoot the Poltergeist
Wood knocks, single foot prints, gifting, throwing stones, unexplainable hand prints, weird oders: often associated with Bigfoot in the forest are all found in poltergeist reports when they occur in a home or building. WT Watson discusses this idea on the Paranormal Podcast and in his book The Forest Poltergeist: Class B Encounters and the Paranormal and Where the Footprints End: High Strangeness and the Bigfoot Phenomen by Joshua Cutchin and Timmonthy Renner.
Bigfoot is a Multidimension or Spiritiul Creature
This covers the ‘Bigfoot is a Native American spirit theory’, some reports of Bigfoot becoming invisible during sightings and great tales like the ‘Lawrence Livermore National Labs Bigfoot story‘, which includes Stephen Hawkings, the 4th dimension,and UC Berkeley.

Professor’s Emeritus at UC Berkeley are still alive and ready and willing to testify about the Bigfoot held in captivity at Lawrence Livermore National Labs in the early 60’s. That were studied by physicists, witnessed and video taped disappearing and reappearing, videotaped as orbs in the containment room, and that escaped by outsmarting their Phd captors. Teachers who taught about the paranormal Bigfoot as part of a US Congress study during the 60’s, to Beaverton Oregon’s School District 48, 4-12 graders, are also still alive and include college football record holding offensive coach, Darrel (Mouse) Davis, who taught about Bigfoot as part of a psychology class, at Sunset High School up to about 1971. There are piles of witnesses that Bigfoot researchers just don’t want to raise one little finger to find and confirm this LLNL factual history.
In respone to Neal, and I mean no disrespect, the version of the story I heard in regard to the Bigfoot captured at Lawrence Livermore National Labs is that the Bigfoot was a 4th dimensional creature that escaped when a Janitor opened a door to unmarked cell. The creature then used its 4th dimensional abilities to walk through scientists, who were “able to determine the creature’s intentions were not hostile.” The creature wandered around the lab for weeks, because it just wanted out. So…how were they able to capture a being that can walk through solid matter in the first place? If it can walk through solid matter, why didn’t it just leave the lab? I really mean no disrespect, but I can’t help but wonder about that particular story.
I’ve lived many places throughout the US. I am very familiar with our Hairy Brothers. However, was unprepared for the aggressive species in the PNW. Even their aura is threatening. Really, caught me off guard at Mt. St Helen site. We had gone to the area for an afternoon site seeing. It was November 2004? We had our camera with us taking great shots of the area. We were about 5 miles of the base of the mountain. It had been a good day and my husband was enjoying the trip. I was too. However, I had broken tribal preparations and was a bit concerned. I could hear my grandmother’s long ago instructions in my head. All I could do was call on the ancestors to protect me A few hours later, I started to feel unwell. I tried to ignore it. I finally felt that we needed to leave. My husband, was taking a photo of me with the mountain in the background. Suddenly, I heard, “leave now now” . My husband didn’t hear anything. He reluctantly started gathering our gear. Our vehicle was less than a mile away. We started walking and I felt that I was being pushed along. By an unseen hand. It was eerie. This was not unusual as I have many experiences. I have the gift of seeing as we call it. My husband had most of our gear in the vehicle. The wind had changed direction and we both smelled rotting flesh. I leaned over and vomited. Between that odor and the headache building it was too much. He wanted to look around for the source of the odor. Again, clearly heard “leave now now”. I told him we needed to go. We got in the vehicle as it was becoming dusk. He drove less than a mile and stoped. He was checking his map. Less than 10 minutes later the first of several rocks hit our vehicle. My husband was pissed off. He thought it was teenagers as he didn’t believe in Sasquatch. He was going to get out and tell them off. Bad idea! A few seconds later a tree fell behind us. Blocking the roadway. I could see something big and black moving ahead of us. I knew it was going to knock down another tree and trap us. I desperately tried to get my husband to hit the gas and leave. The sun was down and looking ahead were two large red glowing eyes. A huge angry male was done warning us. My husband was still distracted by the map. I screamed we need to get out of here. I prayed for the ancestors to help us get away. A few miles later and I was starting to feel better. My husband never did see Sasquatch. How could it be? To this day, he is a nonbeliever. This was my first encounter where I felt fear. Perhaps because I did not prepare? I believe the species in the PNW is not as friendly. I could feel rage and aggression from the big male. I am convinced he was going to harm if not kill us? Are they more aggressive in the PNW?
MY THEORY IS THAT CAN READ OUR MINDS SO, THEY KNOW WHEN HIDE, JUST AS WE ARE LOOKING THEIR WAY. SO, WE ONLY CATCH GLIMPSES OF BIGFOOT…..
I am no kind of scientist but I do think that here must be something out there for all the people who have reported seeing . My thought is that bigfoot (or whatever you want to call it) has an ability to do something that we just cannot comprehend, open a door to another dimension. That is how I would explain that he just seems to disappear when he is spotted. As for not showing up on field cameras, maybe they just are not in the right places. Is there any evidence of someone getting a picture and being right buy a field camera and that getting a photo as well?
You missed a theory and one with lots of evidence. Sasquatch is partly human. I am sure you know the first few blood/hair and dna tests were thrown out as evidence as thought to be contaminated by human dna. Melba Ketchum and dozens of others did a full dna sequence and found them to be maternally human paternally unknown. They even have a scientific name in zoobooks. Homo Sapiens Cognatus.
I lived at Coles Corner for 8 years and saw 3 different individual Sasquatch on 2 occasions. Not to mention several tracks, boulder throwing and some other interesting phenomena. I am a knower of their existence.
